Bookbub’s Top 25, reviewed: Slave to Sensation

Slave to Sensation by Nalini Singh and the entire Psy-Changling series are some of my all-time favorite books, not just romances. I am a sucker for a well-built alternative reality or fantasy world and Singh delivers in spades. Set in what is basically contemporary San Francisco, the world looks just a little different from what we’re used to. In addition to all the regular humans that we know and love, there are the Psy, people with psychic powers such as telepathy or telekinesis. The Psy have been forced to condition themselves to erase their emotions or risk their psychic gifts running amok. They have thus risen into many roles of power in the world as logical, ruthless businesspeople. Sascha is one of them but knows her gift must remain hidden at all costs. She is a cardinal, a psy of the highest power, but her power is that of empathy, the antithesis of the power the Psy now hold.

Sascha meets Lucas, a powerful and charismatic Changling, one of the race of people who can transform into an animal. Lucas is a panther and the alpha of pack of giant cats that has claimed the Bay area as their territory. Changlings embrace their primal natures as part of themselves and could not be more different than the cold and controlled Psy and yet Sascha and Lucas are inexorably drawn together. Even as evil stalks both their worlds and they must unite to find the source, they find something between them that burns bright enough to reveal what lies in the shadows. Can Sascha and Lucas stop the immediate threat to the Changlings and uncover the secret that Sascha’s powers could reveal?
